Memory Tree Project – Family Activity Guide

Welcome to the Memory Tree Project!
Military life is full of unique adventures, new friendships, and unforgettable experiences. The Memory Tree Project is a creative way for families to reflect on their journey, celebrate their memories, and appreciate the connections they’ve made along the way. This activity helps children visualize their personal growth and embrace their unique story.

How to Get Started

  1. Download and Print the Template:
    • Use the provided printable template to begin your Memory Tree.
    • If you prefer, you can draw your own tree on a large piece of paper or poster board.
  2. Gather Your Supplies:
    • Scissors, glue, tape, crayons, markers, stickers, or any other craft materials.
    • Colored paper for leaves (optional).
  3. Create Your Memory Tree:
    • Cut out the tree template or draw your own tree.
    • Decorate the trunk and branches however you like.
  4. Fill in Your Leaves:
    • Cut out leaves from the template or use colored paper.
    • Write down special memories, places you’ve lived, friendships made, or lessons learned.
    • Get creative! Draw pictures, add stickers, or even attach small photos.
  5. Assemble Your Tree:
    • Attach your memory leaves to the branches.
    • Arrange them in a way that makes sense for your journey.
    • Use glue or tape to secure them in place.
  6. Share and Reflect:
    • Display your Memory Tree somewhere visible in your home.
    • Take time as a family to share stories and reflect on each experience.
    • Encourage children to talk about how each place shaped them and what they loved most.

Ways to Make It Even More Fun!

  • Family Story Time: Gather around and share stories about each place you’ve lived.
  • Memory Scrapbook: Add photos or small souvenirs from different locations.
  • Yearly Update: Make this an annual tradition to see how the tree grows with new experiences.
  • Virtual Sharing: Take a picture and share your tree with family and friends!

Why This Matters

Moving often can be challenging for children, but celebrating their journey helps them build resilience, appreciate new experiences, and feel connected to their past. The Memory Tree Project is a meaningful way to highlight these special moments and reinforce the idea that no matter where they go, their memories and friendships stay with them.

Share Your Memory Tree!

We’d love to see your family’s Memory Tree! Share a photo on social media using #RootsWhereverWeRoam and inspire other military families to celebrate their unique journey.

Happy Creating!
